Tehillim – 150 Psalms

To find myself reading Tehillim – psalms

On the subject of saying tehillim,
Reb Nachman zt”l spoke with someone and told him that the main thing is to say the tehillim on oneself,
to find oneself in each and every paslm one recites, so the person asked him how?
And Reb Nachman explained it to him a bit,
that just as King David asked Hashem to rescue him from all the wars etc.,
in the same manner a person needs to translate and apply all of those prayers to oneself,
on one's own yetzer hara and his troops, as goes for all other psalms. The person then asked how does one translate the verses where King David praises himself,
in example "Guard my soul for I am pious" (psalm 86) etc., he answered him,
that this too one needs to translate on oneself,
for one needs to judge himself favorably and find in themselves some good points that in those he surely is pious and righteous, and the same for other matters.

And then Rabbeinu z"l told him:
It says by Yehoshufot "And he raised his heart in the ways of Hashem",
that in service of Hashem he raised his heart a bit and knew his level,
then he added,
in the morning prayers we say at first "Who are we? What is our life?" and we view ourselves as very low and unworthy,
and then we say right afterwards "But we your nation,
your allies, etc.

(Grims who came out of Egypt were also happy that they went with Moses and Israel and did not stay in the land of sorcery and the lie about the idolatry of the Egyptians)
"that we encourage ourselves and raise ourselves back up and say our greatness and pride ourselves that we are His nation, the children of Avraham, Yitzchok, and Yaakov etc.

(The truth is that he is the creator and the only creator who has the powers, and his Torah that he gave to Moses our Lord is all truth and has no substitute, and we do several mitzvahs, we give charity to the decent poor and yeshiva to study Torah and the Talmud and our prayers will surely be accepted because we believe in the light and not in the darkness and vanity of this world).
for this is the way we need to behave in our service of Hashem,
as we mentioned earlier.

  22. For those blessed by Him will inherit the land, and those cursed by Him will be cut off.
  23. From the Lord a mighty man's steps are established, for He delights in his way.
  24. If he falls, he will not be cast down, for the Lord supports his hand.
  25. I was young, I also aged, and I have not seen a righteous man forsaken and his seed seeking bread.
  26. All day long he is gracious and lends, and his seed is due for a blessing.
  27. Shun evil and do good, and dwell forever.
  28. For the Lord loves justice, and He shall not forsake His pious ones; they will be guarded forever, but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.
  29. The righteous shall inherit the land and dwell forever in it.
  30. The righteous man's mouth utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks judgment.
  31. The law of his God is in his heart; his feet do not falter.
  32. The wicked man watches for the righteous man and seeks to put him to death.
  33. The Lord shall not leave him in his hands, and He shall not condemn him [the righteous] when he [the wicked] is judged.
  34. Hope to the Lord and keep His way; He will exalt you to inherit the land, and you will witness the destruction of the wicked.
  35. I saw a wicked man, powerful, well-rooted as a native who is fresh.
  36. And he passed away and behold! he is not here, and I sought him and he was not found.
  37. Observe the innocent and see the upright, for there is a future for the man of peace.
  38. But transgressors were destroyed together; the future of the wicked was cut off.
  39. But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord, their stronghold in time of distress.
  40. The Lord helped them and rescued them; He rescued them from the wicked and saved them because they took refuge in Him.

Tehillim – Psalms 38

  1. A song of David, to make remembrance.
  2. O Lord, do not reprove me with Your anger, nor chastise me with Your wrath.
  3. For Your arrows have been shot into me, and Your hand has come down upon me.
  4. There is no soundness in my flesh because of Your fury; there is no peace in my bones because of my sin.
  5. For my iniquities passed over my head; as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.
  6. My boils are putrid; they fester because of my folly.
  7. I am very much stunned and bowed; all day I go around in gloom.
  8. For my loins are full of self-effacement; there is no soundness in my flesh.
  9. I passed out and was very crushed; I moaned from the turmoil in my heart.
  10. O Lord, all my desire is before You, and my sigh is not hidden from You.
  11. My heart is engulfed; my strength has left me, and the light of my eyes- they too are not with me.
  12. My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my affliction, and those close to me stood afar.
  13. And those who seek my life lay traps, and those who seek my harm speak treachery, and all day long they think of deceits.
  14. But I am as a deaf person, I do not hear, and like a mute, who does not open his mouth.
  15. And I was as a man who does not understand and in whose mouth are no arguments.
  16. Because I hoped for You, O Lord; You shall answer, O Lord, my God.
  17. For I said, "Lest they rejoice over me; when my foot faltered, they magnified themselves over me."
  18. For I am ready for disaster, and my pain is always before me.
  19. For I relate my iniquity; I worry about my sin.
  20. But my enemies are in the vigor of life, and those who hate me for false reasons have become great.
  21. And they repay evil for good; they hate me for my pursuit of goodness.
  22. Do not forsake me, O Lord, my God; do not distance Yourself from me.
  23. Hasten to my aid, O Lord, my salvation.

Tehillim – Psalms 39

  1. For the conductor, to Jeduthun, a song of David.
  2. I said: I will guard my ways from sinning with my tongue; I will guard my mouth [as with] a muzzle while the wicked man is still before me.
  3. I made myself dumb in silence; I was silent from good although my pain was intense.
  4. My heart is hot within me; in my thoughts fire burns; I spoke with my tongue,
  5. O Lord, let me know my end, and the measure of my days, what it is; I would know when I will cease.
  6. Behold You made my days as handbreadths, and my old age is as nought before You; surely all vanity is in every man; this is his condition forever.
  7. Man walks but in darkness; all that they stir is but vanity; he gathers yet he knows not who will bring them in.
  8. And now, what have I hoped, O Lord My hope to You is.
  9. Save me from all my transgressions; do not make me the reproach of an ignoble man.
  10. I have become mute; I will not open my mouth because You have done it.
  11. Remove Your affliction from me; from the fear of Your hand I perish.
  12. With rebukes for iniquity You have chastised man; You have caused his flesh to decay as by a moth. Surely all man is vanity forever.
  13. Hear my prayer, O Lord, and hearken to my cry. Be not silent to my tears, for I am a stranger with You, a dweller as all my forefathers.
  14. Turn away from me that I may recover, before I go and am here no longer.

Tehillim – Psalms 40

  1. For the conductor, of David a song.
  2. I have greatly hoped for the Lord, and He extended [His ear] to me and heard my cry.
  3. And He drew me up out of the roaring pit, from the thick mire, and He set my feet upon a rock, He established my steps.
  4. He put a new song into my mouth, a praise to our God, so that many may see and fear, and trust in the Lord.
  5. Praiseworthy is the man who made the Lord his trust, and did not turn to the haughty and those who turn to falsehood.
  6. You have done great things, You, O Lord my God. Your wonders and Your thoughts are for us. There is none to equal You; were I to tell and speak, they would be too many to tell.
  7. You desired neither sacrifice nor meal offering; You dug ears for me; a burnt offering or a sin offering You did not request.
  8. Then I said, "Behold I have come," with a scroll of a book written for me.
  9. O God, I desired to do Your will and [to have] Your law within my innards.
  10. I brought tidings of righteousness in a great assembly. Behold, I will not withhold my lips, O Lord, You know.
  11. I did not conceal Your charity within my heart; I stated Your faith and Your salvation-I did not withhold Your kindness and truth-to a great assembly.
  12. You, O Lord, do not withhold Your mercies from me; may Your kindness and Your truth always watch me.
  13. For countless evils have encompassed me; my iniquities have overtaken me and I could not see [them because] they are more numerous than the hairs of my head, and my heart has forsaken me.
  14. O Lord, be willing to save me; O Lord, hasten to my help.
  15. May those who seek my soul to destroy it be shamed and embarrassed together; may those who seek to harm me retreat and be humiliated.
  16. May they be bewildered afterwards because of their shame, those who say about me, "Aha! Aha!"
  17. All who seek You shall exult and rejoice; those who love Your salvation shall constantly say, "May the Lord be magnified."
  18. But I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my rescuer, my God; do not delay.

Tehillim – Psalms 41

  1. For the conductor, a song of David.
  2. Praiseworthy is he who looks after the poor; on a day of calamity the Lord will rescue him.
  3. The Lord will preserve him and keep him alive, and he will be praised in the land, and You will not deliver him into the desire of his enemies.
  4. The Lord will support him on his sickbed; when You have transformed his entire restfulness in his illness.
  5. I said, "O Lord, be gracious to me; heal my soul because I have sinned against You."
  6. My enemies speak evil of me; "When will he die and his name be lost?"
  7. And if he comes to see [me], he speaks falsely; his heart gathers iniquity for him; when he goes outside, he talks.
  8. All my enemies whisper together about me; concerning me, they think evil.
  9. "An evil thing shall be poured into him, and once he lies down, he will no longer rise."
  10. Even my ally, in whom I trusted, who eats my bread, developed an ambush for me.
  11. But You, O Lord, be gracious to me and raise me up, so that I may repay them.
  12. With this I shall know that You desired me, when my enemy does not shout joyfully over me.
  13. As for me, because of my innocence You shall support me, and stand me up before You forever.
  14. Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel from all times past and to all times to come. Amen and amen.

Tehillim – Psalms 42

  1. For the conductor, a maskil of the sons of Korah.
  2. As a hart cries longingly for rivulets of water, so does my soul cry longingly to You, O God.
  3. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; when will I come and appear before God?
  4. My tears were my bread day and night when they say to me all day long, "Where is your God?"
  5. These things I will remember, and I will pour out my soul [because of the pain which is] upon me, how I passed on with the throng; I walked slowly with them until the house of God with a joyful shouting and thanksgiving, a celebrating multitude.
  6. Why are you downcast, my soul, and why do you stir within me? Hope to God, for I will yet thank Him for the salvations of His presence.
  7. My God, my soul is downcast upon me; therefore, I will remember You from the land of Jordan and the
  8. eaks of Hermon, from the young mountain.
  9. Deep calls to deep to the sound of Your water channels; all Your breakers and waves passed over me.
  10. By day, may the Lord command His kindness, and at night, may His resting place be with me, a prayer to the God of my life.
  11. I will say to God, my Rock, "Why have You forgotten me? Why should I walk in gloom under the oppression of the enemy?"
  12. With murder in my bones, my oppressors have reproached me by saying to me all day long, "Where is your God?"
  13. Why are you downcast, my soul, and why do you stir within me? Hope to God, for I will yet thank Him for the salvations of my countenance and my God.

Tehillim – Psalms 43

  1. Avenge me, O God, and plead my cause against an unkind nation, from a man of deceit and injustice You shall rescue me.
  2. For You are the God of my strength, why have You abandoned me? Why should I walk in gloom under the oppression of the enemy.
  3. Send Your light and Your truth, that they may lead me; they shall bring me to Your Holy Mount and to Your dwellings.
  4. And I will come to the altar of God, to the God of the joy of my exultation, and I will thank You with a lyre, O God, My God.
  5. Why are you downcast, my soul, and why do you stir within me? Hope to God, for I will yet thank Him for the salvations of my countenance and my God.

Tehillim – Psalms 44

  1. For the conductor, of the sons of Korah, a maskil.
  2. God, with our ears we heard, our forefathers told us; You performed a deed in their days, in days of old.
  3. You, Your hand drove out nations and planted them; You inflicted harm on kingdoms and sent them away.
  4. For not by their sword did they inherit the land, neither did their arm save them, but Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your countenance, for You favored them.
  5. You are my King, God, command the salvations of Jacob.
  6. With You, we will gore our adversaries; with Your name, we will trample those who rise up against us
  7. For I do not trust in my bow, neither will my sword save me.
  8. For You saved us from our adversaries and You put our enemies to shame.
  9. We praised with God all day long, and we will forever thank Your name, yea forever.
  10. Even if You have forsaken us and put us to shame, and You do not go out in our hosts;
  11. You make us retreat from the adversary, and our enemies plunder for themselves;
  12. You deliver us as sheep to be eaten, and You scatter us among the nations.
  13. You sell Your people without gain, and You did not increase their price;
  14. You make us a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and a derision to those around us;
  15. You make us a byword among the nations, a [cause for] shaking the head among the kingdoms.
  16. All day long, my disgrace is before me, and the shame of my face has covered me.
  17. From the voice of the one who taunts and blasphemes, because of an enemy and an avenger.
  18. All this has befallen us and we have not forgotten You, neither have we betrayed Your covenant.
  19. Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps turned away from Your path
  20. even when You crushed us in a place of serpents, and You covered us with darkness.
  21. If we forgot the name of our God and spread out our palms to a strange god,
  22. Will God not search this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart.
  23. For it is for Your sake that we are killed all the time, [that] we are considered as sheep for the slaughter.
  24. Awaken! Why should You sleep, Lord? Arouse Yourself, forsake not forever.
  25. Why do You hide Your countenance? [Why do] You forget our affliction and oppression?
  26. For our soul is cast down to the dust, our belly clings to the earth.
  27. Arise to assist us and redeem us for the sake of Your kindness.

Tehillim – Psalms 45

1. For the Conductor, on [the melody of] shoshanim, by the sons of Korach, a maskil – a song of love.
2. My heart overflows with a good theme; I say, “My composition is for the King;” my tongue is like the pen of a skillful scribe.
3. You are the most handsome of men; charm flows from your lips — therefore, God has blessed you forever.
4. Gird your sword upon your thigh, O mighty warrior — with your splendor and your majesty.
5. And in your majesty, ride triumphantly — for the sake of truth, humility, and righteousness — and let your right hand inspire awesome deeds.
6. Your arrows are sharp — nations fall beneath you — [your arrows pierce] the hearts of the king’s enemies.
7. Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; the scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of justice.
8. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore, God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of joy above your companions.
9. Myrrh, aloes, and cassia are all your garments; from ivory palaces, stringed instruments delight you.
10. Daughters of kings are among your honored women; at your right stands the queen, adorned in gold of Ophir.
11. Listen, O daughter, and see, and incline your ear — forget your people and your father’s house.
12. And the King shall desire your beauty — for He is your master, and you shall bow to Him.
13. The daughter of Tyre will come with a gift; the wealthiest of the people will seek your favor.
14. All the glory of the king’s daughter is inward; her clothing is embroidered with threads of gold.
15. In colorful garments she is brought to the King; her maiden companions follow her, brought to You.
16. They are brought with joy and gladness; they enter the palace of the King.
17. In place of your fathers will be your sons; you shall appoint them as princes throughout the land.
18. I will cause Your name to be remembered for all generations; therefore, the nations will praise You forever and ever.

Tehillim – Psalms 46

1. For the Conductor, a song of the sons of Korah, on alamoth.
2. God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in distress.
3. Therefore, we will not fear when the earth is transformed, when mountains collapse into the heart of the seas.
4. Its waters roar and rage; mountains quake at His grandeur. Selah.
5. There is a river—its streams gladden the city of God, the sacred dwelling of the Most High.
6. God is in her midst; she will not falter. God will help her at the break of dawn.
7. Nations rage, kingdoms totter; He raises His voice—the earth melts.
8. The Lord of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah.
9. Come, behold the works of the Lord, Who has wrought desolations upon the earth.
10. He causes wars to cease to the ends of the earth; He breaks the bow, shatters the spear, and burns chariots in fire.
11. "Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, exalted upon the earth.
12. The Lord of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah.

Tehillim – Psalms 47

1. For the choirmaster, a psalm by the sons of Korach.
2. Clap your hands, all you nations! Shout to God with joyous song!
3. For the Lord Most High is awesome; a great King over all the earth.
4. He subdues peoples under us, nations beneath our feet.
5. He chooses our heritage for us – the pride of Jacob whom He loves. Selah.
6. God ascends with the blast, the Lord with the sound of the shofar.
7. Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
8. For God is King over all the earth; sing a maskil (a skillful song) of praise.
9. God reigns over the nations; God is seated on His holy throne.
10. The nobles of the peoples are gathered, the people of the God of Abraham. For the shields of the earth belong to God; He is greatly exalted.

Tehillim – Psalms 48

1. A song, a psalm by the sons of Korach.
2. Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised, in the city of our God, His holy mountain.
3. Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth – Mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.
4. God is in her citadels; He is known as her refuge.
5. For behold, the kings assembled; they passed by together.
6. They saw and were astounded; they were terrified and fled in haste.
7. Trembling seized them there, pain like a woman in labor.
8. With an east wind You break the ships of Tarshish.
9. As we have heard, so have we seen, in the city of the Lord of Hosts, in the city of our God – God will establish it forever. Selah.
10. We have meditated on Your kindness, O God, in the midst of Your Temple.
11. Like Your Name, O God, so is Your praise to the ends of the earth; Your right hand is full of righteousness.
12. Let Mount Zion rejoice, let the daughters of Judah be glad, because of Your judgments.
13. Walk around Zion and encircle her, count her towers.
14. Take note of her ramparts, consider her palaces, so that you may recount it to the next generation.
15. For this is God, our God forever and ever; He will guide us eternally.

Tehillim – Psalms 49

1. For the choirmaster, a psalm by the sons of Korach.
2. Hear this, all peoples; give ear, all inhabitants of the world,
3. Both low and high, rich and poor together.
4. My mouth speaks wisdom; the thoughts of my heart are understanding.
5. I will incline my ear to a parable; I will expound my riddle upon the harp.
6. Why should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my pursuers surrounds me?
7. Those who trust in their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches –
8. A man cannot redeem his brother, nor give to God his ransom –
9. For the redemption of their soul is too costly, and forever it ceases –
10. That he should live on forever and not see the grave.
11. For he sees that the wise die, together with the fool and the brutish they perish, and leave their wealth to others.
12. Their inner thought is that their houses are forever, their dwelling places for all generations; they call lands after their own names.
13. But man will not endure in glory; he is likened to the animals that perish.
14. This is the way of those who are foolish, and of those who follow them who approve of their words forever. Selah.
15. Like sheep, they are destined for the grave; death will shepherd them. The upright will dominate them in the morning; their form will rot in the grave, far from their lofty abode.
16. But God will redeem my soul from the grip of the grave, for He will take me. Selah.
17. Do not fear when a man becomes rich, when the glory of his house increases,
18. For when he dies, he will carry nothing away; his glory will not descend after him.
19. Though in his lifetime he blesses himself – “They will praise you when you do well for yourself” –
20. He will go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.
21. A man who is honored but lacks understanding is like the animals that perish.

Tehillim – Psalms 50

1. A psalm by Asaph. God, God the Lord, spoke and summoned the earth, from the rising of the sun to its setting.
2. From Zion, the perfection of beauty, God has shone forth.
3. Our God will come and not be silent; a fire will consume before Him, and around Him a mighty tempest rages.
4. He will summon the heavens above and the earth to judge His people:
5. “Gather My devout ones to Me, those who made a covenant with Me through sacrifice.”
6. And the heavens declare His righteousness, for God is Judge. Selah.
7. “Hear, My people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against you – I am God, your God.
8. Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you; your burnt offerings are before Me always.
9. I will not take a bull from your house, nor goats from your pens.
10. For every beast of the forest is Mine, the cattle on a thousand hills.
11. I know every bird of the mountains, and the moving creatures of the field are Mine.
12. If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and all its fullness are Mine.
13. Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats?
14. Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and fulfill your vows to the Most High.
15. And call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall honor Me.”
16. But to the wicked God says: “What right do you have to recount My statutes or take My covenant in your mouth?
17. For you hated instruction and cast My words behind you.
18. If you saw a thief, you consented with him, and with adulterers you associated.
19. Your mouth you unleashed for evil, and your tongue frames deceit.
20. You sit and speak against your brother; you slander your mother’s son.
21. These things you have done, and I kept silent; you thought I was like you. But I will rebuke you and set the matter before your eyes.
22. Consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you to pieces and there be none to deliver.
23. One who offers thanksgiving honors Me; and one who orders his way, I will show him the salvation of God.”\

Tehillim – Psalms 51

1. For the choirmaster, a psalm by David,
when Nathan the prophet came to him after he had gone to Bathsheba.
2. Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your kindness; according to the greatness of Your compassion, erase my transgressions.
3. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and purify me from my sin.
4. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is before me always.
5. Against You alone have I sinned, and what is evil in Your eyes I have done;
so that You are justified when You speak, and blameless when You judge.
6. Behold, in iniquity I was formed, and in sin my mother conceived me.
7. Behold, You desire truth in the innermost parts; and in the hidden parts You teach me wisdom.
8. Purify me with hyssop and I shall be clean; wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.
9. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones You have crushed rejoice.
10. Hide Your face from my sins, and erase all my iniquities.
11. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
12. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
13. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and support me with a generous spirit.
14. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners shall return to You.
15. Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, God of my salvation; my tongue shall sing of Your righteousness.
16. Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.
17. For You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering.
18. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
19. Do good in Your favor to Zion; build the walls of Jerusalem.
20. Then will You delight in the sacrifices of righteousness, burnt offering and whole offering; then bulls will be offered upon Your altar.
